1. The Yankees are borderline unbeatable
The roster isn’t all that much different from last year, the expectations coming into the year were about the same — and yet somehow, they’ve gone and soared over the baseball stratosphere.
Last night it was Anthony Rizzo, with a walk-off home run to sweep the Rays:
They’re now 47–16, and the home winning streak grows:
2. After a four-game sweep of the Cubs at Wrigley, the Padres are now first in the NL West
And Fernando Tatis Jr. hasn’t played a game all season.
3. And the Cubs might just be the worst team in baseball now
Ten straight losses — it’s getting sad on the north side of Chicago. They’re tied now in the standings with the Reds (who started the year 3–22).
They host the 14-game-winning-streak Braves this afternoon.
4. The catch of the day: This kid at Nationals Park
Best day of his life.
5. MLB is encouraging Cal Ripken Jr. to join future Orioles ownership
It’s a contentious time for the organization, with two Angelos brothers suing each other, and so out of that comes a pretty good-sounding idea — if the team does end up being sold.
6. Shohei Ohtani was great on the mound last night
He’s still off from his 2021 MVP form, but still able to wow on a regular basis. Last night he went six shutout innings, gave up just three hits and got the win.
7. The Brewers unveiled their new “City Connect” uniforms
8. The stat of the day: The 2022 Orioles
They’re still bad. But not nearly as bad. Positive thinking.
9. Aaron Judge opts out of the Home Run Derby
No need to compete in the derby when just about every game is a becoming home run derby for the guy.
10. Eric Hosmer’s bat cleanly snapped between his hands
Never quite seen one happen like this before.
11. 29-year-old pitcher Michael Kelly made his MLB debut after 11 years in the minors
There were the positive words, people seeing it as a heartwarming story.
And then the Philly reality check.
12. And lastly, here are both of Mike Trout’s HRs last night
