1. The Red Sox are in last place

A few weeks ago, they’d surged into a comfortable second-place spot in the AL East, turning everything around after a bad start to the year — and well, since then, it’s been all-out collapse.

And the Orioles have now passed them in the standings.

2. But they did have a great ceremony for David Ortiz yesterday

As the Cooperstown festivities migrated to Fenway Park.

3. The catch of the day: Jurickson Profar

Great jump, brilliant speed, perfect catch — for the first out of the ninth inning in a one-run game, a runner already on base, and the Padres hung on to win.

4. The stat of the day: Albert Pujols hits a milestone

And he had an amusing moment with the umpire yesterday, too.

5. The Mets beat the Yankees in the first game of the Subway Series

It started with back-to-back home runs for the Yankees in the first inning, but as someone said on the broadcast: “It’s not a lead until you get through the bottom of the inning.”

And then, sure enough — the Mets scored four in the bottom half of the inning, and went on to win 6–3.

6. And a positive update on Jacob deGrom this afternoon

Like acquiring the best pitcher in baseball at the trade deadline.

7. The highlight tape of the day: Eloy Jimenez

8. Fernando Tatis Jr. is almost all the way back

9. Various news and bits from around the league

10. And lastly, never kick a baseball bat

Even if your 107-win team last year is now under .500.
