1. Albert Pujols will participate in the Home Run Derby

The new “legend selections” rule to the All-Star Game got him into the weekend festivities, and now he’ll be dipping his toes into more than just the game — but the derby too, at 42 years old.

And soon after, some more entries were announced:

2. The catch of the day: Brett Phillips

Filling in for an injured Kevin Kiermaier, the great one came through.

3. Highlights from the Keith Hernandez retired number ceremony

From this past weekend at Citi Field, a fitting tribute to the (probably) most beloved guy in the entire Mets universe.

And the afternoon ended with a special wink and nod to Game 6 of the ’86 World Series, the Mets winning on a walk-off error:

4. The home run of the day: Manny Machado

As Don Orsillo puts it: “Deep into the Denver night!”

5. Robinson Cano made his debut with the Braves

After the Mets (and then Padres) let him go earlier this year, it looked like the major-league career might be coming to an end — and yet, out of nowhere, one of the hottest teams in baseball went and picked him up, and he even got two base hits last night.

6. South Korea might select American players of Korean descent for next year’s World Baseball Classic

7. The blunders of the day

It always helps to remember that even the highest-level professionals are mistake-prone just like everyone else.

8. Dodger Stadium workers are organizing a strike

And it could end up affecting next week’s All-Star Game, depending on how this all shakes out.

9. Several great series to watch tonight

If there’s nothing happening on your Tuesday night, get to channel flipping.

10. And lastly, today’s Tony La Russa highlight

This strange, very underachieving White Sox season continues to bewilder just about everyone watching, including the broadcast team.

And the White Sox went on to lose 4–1, in one of the quickest games of the year (two hours and nine minutes).
